Post Office Protest

Bahamian Media News:

Staff of the General Post Office located at the Town Center Mall protested outside of their offices on Wednesday. The group demanded the removal of Acting Post Master General, Shevonne Johnson. Johnson was appointed last year when Post Master General, Jennifer Johnson was placed on leave.

President of the Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU), Kimsley Ferguson explained the grievances of the staff. He said, “well this morning the staff decided that enough was enough. And so they decided to make a statement in the media making an appeal to the powers that be to have Mrs. Johnson removed.”

According to Ferguson, Johnson is unwilling to communicate with staff members and is abusive and disrespectful. Johnson refutes those claims. She told ZNS News, “I, myself walked into a hostile environment. When it comes to respect, you know, that goes both ways.”

Ferguson said, “Mrs. Johnson, who may want to play the victim, is victimizing persons. Again, successive administrations have abused their abilities to appoint. There are certain ways in which you ascend to positions in the public service. This position does not invite or allow for a contract person to ascend to, again, there are capable and competent individuals who are next to Mrs. Jennifer Johnson to could have ascent to the leadership in the Post Office.”

The Ministry of Transport and Energy released a statement on the matter Wednesday afternoon advising members of the public that the Post Office was “open and functioning.” It also said that the ministry regrets the action taken by some Managers at the Post Office and affirms its commitment to engage in dialogue Post Office staff to resolve concerns.
