New power purchase agreements was signed between the government and Family Island Microgrid Company and Renugen Pro Company Limited for the provision of solar power on Harbour Island, Bimini, Staniel Cay, Black Point, Farmer’s Cay, Moore’s Island, San Salvador, Long Island and Cat Island.

At a signing ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister over the weekend Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis told reporters his administration sees energy reform as a catalyst for development and empowerment. He said, “our vision is to extend it to every island not just New Providence, not just the major economic and population centers but to every island where Bahamians live, work and raise their families. It is an ambitious undertaking requiring the government to take on multiple Bahamian partners to deliver on our promise of widespread change.”

The Prime Minister went further saying, “the power purchase agreements we are signing today represents our unwavering commitment to keeping that promise. These partnerships will bring modern, reliable, affordable electricity to islands that have for too long endured aging infrastructure, frequent outages and exorbitant costs.”

The Minister of Transport and Energy, the Hon. Jobeth Coleby-Davis was also in attendance. She said the signing is a culmination of government’s efforts to increase renewable energy deployment in the country. “These islands will join communities on New Providence, Eleuthera, Abaco and Exuma with utility scale renewable energy projects in the works. “

According to the Minister Family Island Microgrid Company will develop renewable energy solutions for Harbour Island, Bimini, Staniel Cay, Black Point, Farmer’s Cay and Moore’s Island. Renugen Pro Company Limited will be implement utility scale renewable energy projects on San Salvador, Long Island and Cat Island.
