Officials of Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where they provided updates on electricity issues in the country.
BPL Chief Operating Officer, Anthony Christie confirmed that electricity had been restored at the Preston Albury High School in Rock Sound, Eleuthera after an unapproved electrical installation was corrected.
Christie said, “an electrical installation was done that wasn’t approved and it should have been approved the entities, the Ministry of Works or a certified electrician. BPL at that end would then connect to make sure the supplies connected to the installation. Because something was not correct this caused them to have an issue. This could have been worse than it is, presently it was an outage, it could have resulted in a fire and that would have been the worst case scenario. But right now BPL went in there, they would have done a temporary fix, but again a permanent solution has to be done, a certified electrician has to be used, Ministry of Works has to approve and then we can firm up this connection for the school. The school should be on temporarily right now.”
An update was also provided on the Fresh Creek Power Plant where a fire erupted two weeks ago. BPL Northern Region Manager, Marvin Green told reporters, “right now the Central Andros plant is back in service. We’re still working on some other issues to bring it back to 100% but it’s serviceable now and all of the customers are online. As well, we have a rental that’s in use, it’s in pretty good shape so there are no complaints in that area right now.”
