Remembering The Road To Majority Rule

Bahamian Media News:

Former senator and former Deputy National Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, Robyn Lynes is commenting on the importance of Majority Rule ahead of the public holiday.

In an interview with ZNS News, Lynes spoke about prominent events that led to majority rule in the country.  “The Burma Road Riot was this kind of catalyst for politics, for this energy and this infusion of an understanding of Bahamian people that we don’t have to take this.  That we can fight back, that we can demand better in our own country.   The Burma Road Riot to the General Strike of 1958 to Women’s Suffrage to Majority Rule, I think these are the pivotal moments.  Of course the creation of the Progressive Liberal Party, of course, in 1953 because I think that whilst there was an understanding that change needed to come, there was a passion for change, there was no structure for it.  I think things needed to be centralized.  There needed to be a focal point and an organized grouping of people.”

Lynes says the role of the labour movement cannot be forgotten.  “That was the strength behind all of what we see today as this kind of creation of the modern Bahamas.  Regular working people like me and you who understood that the disparity, the socio-economic disparity, in every way shape and form in this country is a hindrance to my progress, to my development and I’m not going to allow my children to experience this kind of inequality, this kind of discrimination.”

The former senator also stressed the importance of teaching young people about the importance of majority rule.  “I remember biblically Moses told the Children of Israel to tell your children about the Exodus, about what God had done.  And similarly, we have to tell our children about our own Exodus, about these moments in history when we were emancipated.

Majority Rule Day is celebrated each yar on January 10th.
