Senior Engineer at the Ministry of Works Francis Clarke appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where he updated members of the media on efforts to repair roads in New Providence.

Clarke said, “we know that the rain intensity has increased over the last few years.  Due to the more active precipitation events during June and July conditions have been hindered for current road repairs efforts with ponding and wet areas and compromising the quality of repairs.”

Clarke also commented on the cause for the excessive street flooding. “One of the reason why we’re having flood on the road, right, is because our roads does not meet twenty first century standards.  Some of these roads were constructed sixty, seventy years ago just to allow access so people can farm and construct their homes. if you can compare the new roads that we constructed between 2004 and 2013, those roads were constructed to international standards and using international specifications.  We don’t have any issues with those roads at this point with respect to potholes.  If you look at our newer roads it is performing very well,” he said.

Clarke says that Ministry of Works staff and twelve private contractors are working to repair road both during the day and night.  He appealed to members of the public to be patience as repairs are being completed.
