School Safety Paramount For Police

School Safety Paramount For Police

Bahamian Media News:

At a press conference held at Police Headquarters on Sunday, Assistant Commissioner of Police In Charge of School Policing Chaswell Hanna revealed that sixty School Resources Officers will be deployed to junior and senior public high schools this school year.

Hanna told reporters, “last semester we charged a number of parents for coming on the school campuses and trying to create a disturbance with teachers and school administrators.  If there is a grievance you have make an appointment with the school and try to resolve that conflict in a peaceful manner.  Do not come to campus trying to pick a fight, try to assault the teacher.  We’re not going to allow that to happen.”

The Assistant Commissioner also addressed the issue of business that encourage truancy.  “Last semester we’ve been noticing that a number of students have been hanging out in barber shops in and around schools well passed  9:00am.  They’re hanging out there, some, I guess running last and want to get their haircut but we have found that they’ve been spending too much time in those barber shops hanging out when they should be in school.  I want to remind business owners that under that Education Act school aged students are required to be in school between the hours of 9 and 3.  And if you are being complicit or assisting these students in missing class we are going to take action.”

Hanna also drew attention to vendor selling edible drugs to students.  He said, “we also going to be checking the vendors and checking their products as well.”  He also asked that parents check their children’s school bags.

According to the Assistant Commissioner there has been a 17% decrease in school violence since the start of the school policing program.  He said, “when we started this program, you know, there were a number of school stabbings around school campuses.  I know we’ve seen all too often those videos going viral where students are fighting and some have knives etc., but we’re pleased to report this in the last academic year there were no stabbing incidents. Our School Resource Officers have been active in the schools confiscating contraband, illegal drugs, weapons, mostly knives.”
