Social workers across The Bahamas were honoured and empowered during a special workshop hosted by the Department of Social Services, which falls under the Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting (MOSSIB), as part of activities marking Social Work Month.
Observed annually in March since its establishment in 1963 by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Social Work Month recognizes the vital contributions of social workers and highlights the impact of their work in strengthening individuals, families and communities. This year’s theme, “Social Work: Uplift. Defend. Transform.”, served as a powerful reminder of the profession’s enduring mission.
The Empowerment Workshop, held in the Multi-purpose Room at Sunshine Plaza on Blue Hill Road, brought together social workers, supervisors and support staff for reflection, encouragement and renewed commitment to service. The event also aligned with World Social Work Day, a global initiative celebrating the role of social workers in advancing social justice, equity and community well-being.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, Myles Laroda, Under Secretary Donette Williamson offered a deeply moving tribute to the profession, describing social workers as the “heartbeat” of the department.
“To every social worker gathered here today — thank you,” she said. “Not the kind of thank you that fills a moment and fades, but the kind that is earned through years of watching you walk into the most difficult spaces in our communities and choosing, every single day, to show up anyway.”
Williamson reflected on the theme, noting that it is not merely a slogan but a lived reality for those in the field.
“You uplift — when families feel forgotten, when children feel invisible, when the elderly feel abandoned, you extend a hand and remind them that they matter,” she said. “You defend — you are the voice for those who have been silenced by poverty, by abuse, by systems that were not built with them in mind. And you transform — not just the lives of those you serve, but entire families, communities and generations yet unborn.”
She acknowledged the challenges faced by social workers, including heavy caseloads and emotional strain, while affirming their value and visibility within the department.
“I know the Bahamas does not always see the sacrifices you make behind the scenes,” she said. “But I want you to know — I see you. This department sees you. You are not just employees. You are its heartbeat.”
The workshop formed part of a broader slate of activities across the country aimed at celebrating the achievements of social workers while raising awareness about the critical support they provide daily.
As Social Work Month continues, stakeholders are encouraged to reflect on the profession’s impact and to support ongoing efforts to strengthen systems that protect and uplift the most vulnerable in society.
