In a heartwarming celebration of Autism Awareness Month, the Sunshine Pilot Club of Nassau brought smiles, laughter, and a powerful message of inclusion to dozens of children across New Providence through its signature event, “I Am Extra Special.”
Held on Tuesday, April 21 at the Fox Hill Community Centre, the fun day welcomed autistic students from public primary schools, accompanied by teachers, caregivers, and parents from special education units throughout the island.
The initiative, hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Education Bahamas primary school special education units, created a safe and joyful space where children could simply be themselves—free to play, explore, and connect.
The atmosphere was alive with energy as children moved between games, interactive activities, and entertainment designed to engage their unique abilities and personalities. Food and refreshments added to the festive environment, while moments of calm and connection reflected the day’s deeper purpose.
Beyond the fun, the event also carried a strong educational component. Experts, including representatives from REACH Bahamas, shared insights with parents and caregivers, offering guidance, support, and increased awareness around autism and the importance of early intervention, understanding, and acceptance.
Organizers emphasized that the event is part of a broader mission to help build a society that is more inclusive, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of all children.
The theme, “I Am Extra Special,” served as both affirmation and advocacy—reminding the community that every child deserves to be seen, valued, and supported.
Through initiatives like this, the Sunshine Pilot Club of Nassau continues to shine a light on the importance of inclusion, ensuring that children of all abilities are not only accommodated, but celebrated.
