Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander gave an update on Tuesday on investigations into leaked voice notes allegedly of Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson speaking with purported gang leader Michael Fox Jr., now deceased, about squashing a case against him.
Fernander previously said that police would seek help from their international partners to carry out the investigations and to ensure public confidence in the outcome. He told ZNS News, “what we have done now we had to document what we wanted and the assistance that we need. That was already done from my office and is presently in the hands of Foreign Affairs which will be forwarded to the embassy here. And we will be in a better position and wait for their response but we are moving very quickly with respect to that and the paper trail have to continue to follow.”
The Commissioner expressed that he is pleased with the work done on the investigations so far. “I’m pleased and the investigators here on the ground from SIB (Special Intelligence Branch), they are on the ground, they are working, they are seeing persons and they are documenting. So the investigation is going very well at this time,” he said.
When asked about the current state of morale among officers Fernander said, “the vast majority of the officers are good officers. I’m talking about professional officers. As you know, we continue to weed out the bad apples. Yes, some of the officers feel down and I had the opportunity to speak to a number of officers from different areas and they prepared to rally together to ensure and protect the reputation of this organization.”
Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson is currently on garden leave while investigations are ongoing.
