Taxi Drivers Protest

Bahamian Media News:

Taxi drivers staged a protest outside of the Nassau Cruise Port on Sunday. The drivers claim that management of the cruise port have failed to deliver on promises.

Bahamas Taxi Cab Union President, Tyrone Butler explained some of their grievances to ZNS News. He said, “the port has given some assurance in its initial stage that things would be better for taxi drivers. Unfortunately, they’re not realizing that and the taxi drivers are fed up. They don’t have basic access to the restroom. At certain times, the parking lot, they are locked out of the parking. And so what you’re seeing here now is the frustration of all the things that’s been building.”

During the protest taxi drivers blocked the entrance to the cruise port which led to a standoff with police officers. Tow trucks were called to remove the vehicles and at least two arrests were made.

Bahamas Taxi Cab Union Tour Chairman, Erica Thompson said, “we’re standing strong in our stance today. The Nassau Cruise Port is not responding to us and so this is the only avenue that seems that they will make a response to and that’s what we’re here for.”

In 2019, A agreement was signed between the Bahamas Taxi Cab Union and Global Ports Holding outlining the partnership between the two entities.

Taxi Cab Union officials say they will persist until their concerns are addressed.
