Saint Augustine’s College (SAC) released a statement over the weekend confirming the death of a student who was representing the school at a robotics challenge in Panama.
The student was later identified as 11th grader Madeline Thompson. It has been reported that Thompson fell to her death from the 27th to the 12th floor of the hotel where she was staying with other SAC students. The school was dismissed at 12 noon on Monday after a special assembly was held and grief counseling provided.
Thompson is the second person associated with the learning institution to pass away in recent weeks. Derek Rolle, parent of SAC student, Derek Rolle Jr. was shot and killed on Thursday past.
Director General of Foreign Affairs, Jerusa Léa Dean Ali told reporters on Monday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the organizers of the event. She said, “we’re also in contact with our honorary council who’s spoken with Panamanian officials and who’s spoken with the family of Ms. Thompson.”
The Director General continued saying, “we do our best to stay focused on the families, stay in touch with the families and submit queries through official channels so that there is no delay because its almost like retraumatizing.”
Dean Ali explained that the ministry is focused on Panama, Haiti, Bahamians stranded in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa and other consular emergencies happening now.
Among those offering condolences to Thompson’s family was Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis who released a statement via social media on Monday.
