In a proactive move to improve access to health care in urban communities, the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) is once again taking the clinic to the people. Partnering with the Public Hospitals Authority, Doctor’s Hospital, and other supporters, the URA is hosting its 2nd Annual Health and Wellness Fair Series.

Set to take place on the grounds of the Obadiah H. Wilchcombe Complex this Saturday, the event will transform the space into a fully functional mini clinic. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., attendees will have access to a range of free health services including eye exams, cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure screenings, foot care, and dietary consultations.

Mental health counseling and social support services will also be available, with the highlight of the event being a community blood drive. Vaccinations for measles and spa wellness demonstrations will round out the day’s offerings.

Senator Kirkland Russell, Deputy Director of the URA, emphasized the importance of making health care convenient and accessible, especially in light of recent HIV data and community health reports.

“We’re bringing the clinic to the residents,” said Senator Russell. “We want to ensure everyone, from East to West Grand Bahama, has the opportunity to benefit.”

To that end, complimentary bus transportation will be provided from all seven centers across the island. Senator Russell also issued a special appeal to employees of major organizations — particularly members of the armed forces, BORCO, and the Grand Bahama Shipyard — to donate blood and help save lives.

The public is encouraged to attend and take advantage of this vital community initiative.
