The Valley Boys Junkanoo Group has recently faced challenges with it leadership and administration. Interim President of the group, Trevor Davis spoke with ZNS News on Tuesday about its future as they prepared to participate in the Labour Day festivities.
Flanked by members of the group at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium Davis said, “we’re hoping to transform this group into what it used to be for years. And everybody know the Valley Boys organization is proud of coming to Bay Street and getting in the winner’s circle. We’ve been having some challenges over the years, internally, and now the challenges has foster over. And so myself along with all the Valley Boys you see around here today we have take bold steps to go ahead and correct the problems that we have in this organization.”
Davis outlined some of the issues that the Junkanoo group has been facing. “We get to find out that the Valley Boys Junkanoo group was not registered as an NPO for years and I think that’s one of the major concerns for us because with not being registered there’s no opportunity for accountability, transparency and structure. So a lot of things that the members was asking for and seeking for over the years wasn’t able to come to fruition because of this and we also get to find out that the Valley Boys logo was not trademarked. And so we now have documents in our hand that belongs to all the members of the Valley Boys. The logo is trademarked and the organization is now registered,” he said.
The Interim President also addressed the relationship between the group and the Junkanoo Corporation New Providence (JCNP). Davis said, “we’re going to call for the minister of culture to come in and the NJC so we can have some kind of intervention. But based on our findings, I stand to be corrected, the JCNP doesn’t even have a contract with the government from 2008/2010, now I stand to be corrected. But if that is the case we need to know because there’s no way the someone who isn’t properly documented can come and be in charge of someone who is documented, so that’s all we’re asking for.”
Davis said the goal is to bring everybody back home and to unite this organization again.
