VAT Reduction Tour

Bahamian Media News:

Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis visited Solomon’s Fresh Market in the Harbour Bay Shopping Center on Tuesday, one day ahead of the elimination of VAT on unprepared food items.

Mr. Davis told reporters, “I wanted to come to a grocery store because this is where people feel the pressure most, buying food. They feel it when they roll it to the register and they feel it at the register and they feel when they get home and try to make, what I call, the week work. That is why my focus has been clear. I’m trying to bring down the cost of living and give Bahamian families real breathing room.”

AML Foods Chairman, Franklyn Butler accompanied the Prime Minister at the store and assured that prices would reflect the VAT reduction at 12 midnight. He said, “all of our price tags are connected wirelessly so we’re able to use our computer systems to put through price changes. We don’t have to price every item.”

Mr. Davis said the government eliminated VAT on unprepared foods because prices weigh heavily on working people. “Government cannot solve pressure in one day but government can act where it has the power to act,” he said.

The Prime Minister also said that he has spoke to retail grocers and they have committed to working with the government to ensure that savings are passed on directly consumers.
