The Department of Consumer Affairs is advising Bahamians to examine their receipts as the elimination of VAT on unprepared food items takes effect on April 1st.
Head of Department of Consumer Affairs, Rex Adderley told ZNS News on Tuesday some stores may require more time to change prices. He said, “we know for a fact that with the big supermarkets it’s gonna take them time cause it’s gonna be a process over a period of time for them to actually change the self price. But what we expect is that their point of sales would reflect the reduction of the VAT.”
Adderley also provided examples of the items that are now VAT free. ” You will be looking at items such as fresh and frozen meats, vegetables, fruits and cold cuts.”
He also stated, “items that would not appear on that listing for tomorrow will be items like candies, sodas, cleaning supplies and detergents.”
Addderley advised consumers to contact the department to report any issues they encounter.
