The efforts of World Wars I and II veterans was remembered at a service held at Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday. Governor General, the Most Hon. Dame Cynthia Pratt along with government officials led by Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin were in attendance. The uniformed branches and a number of civic organizations were also represented.
Bishop of the Anglican Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Laish Boyd addressed those gathered at the service. He said, “my brothers and sisters our world is not without arms conflict and so we must never stop gathering and remembering. Most of us will never be involved in a war so it will not touch our lives directly but the lessons from war touch our lives everyday and there are two important lessons to keep before us, sacrifice and peace.”
Rev. Boyd went on to say, “if we look at the armed conflicts of our current time. Look at the devastation which they have wrought, the displacement of people, the destruction of homes, the annihilation of infrastructure. Did I say that conflict shattered lives? Yes it does and even in our personal relationships conflict does so much damage and that is why, my friends, we have to work for peace, we have to strive for harmony and even sometimes we have to give up our own rights for the sake of a greater good and for a vision which our attacker does not share.”
Remembrance Day is observed on the second Sunday each year.
