Bahamian Media News:

In her remarks at ‘Global Day of Parents’ Symposium, June 26, 2026 Mrs. Ann Marie Davis of the Office of the Spouse of the Prime Minister, said “the work of parenting often happens far from the spotlight. It happens in early morning routines, late-night conversations, homework at the kitchen table, difficult decisions, and countless acts of love that may go unnoticed by the wider world and even by our own children. Yet few responsibilities carry greater influence. Every day, parents help shape values, build confidence, and provide guidance.

“That is why I am grateful to join you as we observe the Global Day of Parents and engage in this important conversation about the challenges facing parents in today’s Bahamas.”

Addressing the symposium, conducted by the Ministry of Social Services, the Bahamas Crisis Centre, Children Marriage and Family Alliance, and the Bahamas Christian Council, Mrs. Davis said: “This day serves as an important reminder that while the world continues to change, the role of parents remains one of the most significant and influential responsibilities in society. We as parents are often our child’s first teachers, first protectors, first encouragers, and first examples of love and respect. The values children learn at home often become the values they carry into their schools, relationships, and communities.

She acknowledged, “Parenting isn’t easy. Every generation has faced its own unique challenges. However, many parents today find themselves navigating an increasingly complex world. There is the balance of work, financial responsibilities, family obligations, social pressures, and the ever-changing influence of technology. And we have to do that all while trying to raise healthy, confident, and compassionate children.”

Mrs. Davis pointed out, “the truth is that there is no perfect parent. Parenting is a journey of learning, adjusting, and growing alongside our children. There will be successes and there will be mistakes. There will be moments of joy and moments of uncertainty.”

But, she emphasized: “What matters most is our commitment to showing up and providing children with the love, guidance, and stability they need. And another important thing about acknowledging the mistakes we make with our children, parents? We must learn the power of apologizing when we’ve hurt our children. There is nothing wrong with saying ‘I’m sorry.’

“The topics being discussed today are among the most important conversations we can have as a society.”

She told the audience at the Hearing Room, Aventura Plaza, that it is important to remember that parents should not have to face the challenges alone. “Strong families are supported by strong communities. We all have a role to play in creating environments where children and families can thrive.

“The Office of the Spouse of the Prime Minister remains committed to initiatives that strengthen families, protect children, and promote healthy communities. Recognizing that when parents are supported, children are more likely to flourish, and when children flourish, our nation becomes stronger.  And isn’t that what we want?

“Today is not only about identifying challenges. It is also about sharing solutions, building partnerships, and encouraging one another. It is about recognizing that while the issues we face may be complex, they are not insurmountable when we work together.

“As we continue this symposium, I encourage each of you to truly listen, share your experiences, and consider how each of us can contribute to creating safer and healthier environments for families throughout The Bahamas.”
