King Charles III Calls on Bahamian Youth to Preserve National Heritage and Protect the Environment

Bahamian Media News:

His Majesty King Charles III joined hundreds of young Bahamians at Clifford Park on Tuesday,  October 28 2026, for the Future Bahamas Youth Rally and Exhibition, celebrating youth achievement, innovation and cultural heritage during National Youth Month.

The event formed part of His Majesty’s three-day official visit to The Bahamas, marking his first return as King.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Hon. I. Chester Cooper; Minister of Youth and Sports, the Hon. Mario K. Bowleg and Minister of Innovation and National Development, the Hon. Sebastian Bastian.

He subsequently interacted with students showcasing four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives, including participants of the recently pioneered Young Innovators Club.

The King later joined Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis and Mrs. Ann Marie Davis for a vibrant cultural programme featuring quadrille, folk dance, ring play, rake-and-scrape music and spoken word. Performances by the Creative and Performing Arts School (CAPAS) and the Combined Youth Marching Band highlighted the talents and traditions of young Bahamians.

Addressing attendees, His Majesty reflected on witnessing The Bahamas’ Independence celebrations at Clifford Park in 1973, while praising the nation’s cultural achievements and acknowledging historical injustices.

Although His Majesty acknowledged these historical injustices, he did not issue a formal apology for Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. He noted that leaders of affected Commonwealth countries would discuss related matters at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

Turning his attention to the younger generation, the King highlighted the growing challenges facing young people, particularly climate change and its implications for vulnerable island nations such as The Bahamas.

He encouraged Bahamian youth to assume a meaningful role in environmental conservation, sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources, stressing the importance of protecting the planet for generations yet to come.

His Majesty also praised the contribution of young people to innovation and national development, urging them to build on the legacy inherited from their ancestors while creating a more sustainable future.

“We cannot escape the fact that the journey ahead contains some treacherous shoals, in particular in an island nation where 90% of the land sits below two metres there is perhaps nowhere better than The Bahamas to understand the reality of climate change that threatens so many communities across the Commonwealth,” the King stated.

He continued, “And so I do not need to remind you the people of these islands that God has not blessed us with this world simply for our enjoyment or our prosperity; our world cries out for healing.”

Reflecting on his years of environmental stewardship the Monarch encouraged those in attendance, particularly the younger generation to embrace its responsibility to protect the environment, preserve national heritage and help secure a sustainable future.

“I have constantly sought to remind people of the need to take into account the inheritance we would bequeath to the younger generations as it will inevitably fall to you as young people of The Bahamas and of the Commonwealth to find ways, both old and new, to restore life to this planet we call home.”

Finally, His Majesty highlighted his longstanding commitment to youth development throughout the Commonwealth, including The Bahamas, emphasising the importance of creating opportunities for young people to succeed while protecting the environment.

“So today I can only invite you to take up the sacred task to play your part in the way that you build for yourselves and your own descendants truly sustainable futures in the way you hold steady sunward you have the chance to show the world how it truly is ‘Better in The Bahamas’ in the years to come this will surely be the measure of every person how they answered the call to care for planet earth; the source of our life, our prosperity and our security.”

The rally provided a fitting platform for the annual Youth Month celebrations, bringing together education, innovation, cultural expression and national pride while reinforcing the vital contribution of young Bahamians to the country’s continued development.
