With just a day remaining before nominations close for the 2026 CIBC Caribbean Unsung Heroes program, Olympic gold medalist Tonique Williams has been announced as a member of the judging panel that will help select The Bahamas’ next Unsung Hero.
Widely respected for her achievements on the world stage and her longstanding commitment to
community development and national service, Williams will lend her experience and perspective
to the panel responsible for reviewing nominations and identifying the Bahamians whose quiet
acts of kindness and service deserve national recognition.
The announcement comes as CIBC Caribbean encourages members of the public to submit
nominations on or before July 31. The program celebrates individuals who consistently make a
positive difference in their communities, often without seeking recognition or reward. CIBC Caribbean Country Head, Terrance Gibson, said Williams’ involvement reflects the significance of the program and the caliber of the individuals being recognized.
“Tonique has spent her life demonstrating excellence, discipline and service, both on and off the
track. She understands that true success is measured not only by personal achievement but
also by the impact we have on others. We are delighted to welcome her to this year’s judging
panel.”
He continued, “Across every island and every community, there are people quietly making life
better for someone else. They volunteer their time, support families in need, mentor young
people and provide hope where it is needed most. We know these individuals exist, but they can
only be recognized if someone takes the time to nominate them.”
Williams said she was honored to be part of an initiative that shines a light on people whose
contributions often go unnoticed.
“Throughout my life, I have learned that some of the greatest champions are not the ones
standing on a podium. They are the people who choose to serve others every day without
expecting recognition. My own success was made possible by the countless coaches, mentors,
family members and supporters who worked behind the scenes and helped me achieve Olympic
gold. It is therefore a privilege to help celebrate these unsung heroes, and I encourage
everyone to think of someone in their life whose contribution deserves to be recognized and
whose story deserves to be told,” she said.
Officially relaunched last year after a ten-year hiatus, CIBC Caribbean’s Unsung Heroes program recognizes extraordinary individuals from across the region who demonstrate selfless service, compassion and community leadership. This year’s campaign also features increased prize funding for the regional winner and runners-up, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to celebrating those making a lasting difference in Caribbean communities.
Nominations remain open until Friday, July 31, for individuals aged 10 and older who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities or demonstrated an extraordinary act of heroism, bravery or kindness. Following the close of nominations, national winners will be selected before advancing to regional judging later this year.
