Privy Council Rules In Paradise Island Land Dispute

Bahamian Media News:

The Privy Council handed down a ruling today in a case involving Paradise Island Lighthouse and Beach Club Company Limited and the government.

The case is centered on an appeal brought by Toby Smith of Paradise Island Lighthouse and Beach Club contending that a letter he received from the minister responsible for lands and survey in 2020, along with a lease for execution, was a binding agreement for 21 acres of crown land on Paradise Island.

Mr. Smith’s claim was dismissed in both the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. He was granted leave to appeal the loss to the Privy Council in July 2025. The matter was heard at the Privy Council on July 20th, 2026.

Smith’s appeal was dismissed by the Privy Council.
