The Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority recently issued a notice to businesses and individuals seeking to erect roadside signs of any kind on land under its jurisdiction that approval must first be obtained from the Authority.

Executive Chairman, Jamahl Strachan, spoke with ZNS News on the issue. He said, “all of those spaces are able to be rented out and monetized for the government’s benefit. So you would have seen persons who erect signs and they leave them there for an extremely long time, past their date and then it goes from esthetically displeasing to also now annoyances. So we’re fully enforcing that particular provision stating that if interested persons would like to advertise come through the Parks and Beaches permitting section. We will GPS locate where the sign will be erected so that we can monitor and maintain the duration of the lifespan of that particular sign, so it can also be demolished after its hit maturity.”

Strachan also noted that signs erected without approval or beyond its end date can face removal. He said, “our inspectors go out daily and they canvas the entire island. So any billboard erected improperly they will receive a sticker informing them of a demolition date. It normally about five to seven days, just so that they can come in, because we believe in persons having a fair opportunity. So they can come in and become compliant and if that particular date is not met or if that provision of compliance is not satisfied we’ll be forced to demolished.”
