The Protection Against Violence Commission is deeply concerned by the several reported sexual assault cases that have emerged across The Bahamas over the past two weeks, including the most recent alleged incident involving a young female. These troubling reports serve as a stark reminder that violence continues to threaten the safety and well-being of individuals and families throughout our communities. The Commission unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, particularly sexual violence.

The Protection Against Violence Act, 2023, was enacted by the Parliament of The Bahamas on August 11, 2023. Commissioners were appointed with effect from February 1, 2026. The Act aims to protect and support victims of violence while ensuring compliance with international human rights obligations. Further, the Act establishes the Commission to oversee the implementation of the law designed to:

Prevent and address violence in our country;

Protect victims by providing legal, social and psychological support; and

Cover all persons affected by violence, whether physical, sexual, psychological, economic or online harassment.

Accordingly, the Protection Against Violence Commission will continue to speak out against all
forms of violence. The Commission will continue to work collaboratively with government
agencies, law enforcement, civil society organizations and community stakeholders to promote
awareness, strengthen prevention efforts and help ensure that The Bahamas is a safe place for
everyone.

The Commission will continue to monitor these matters while allowing the Royal Bahamas
Police Force to conduct its investigations independently. The Commission remains committed,
to the fullest extent possible, to providing support, guidance and access to resources for victims
of violence and will continue to advocate for justice, accountability and the protection of all
persons
