The inaugural Bahamas Open Chess Classic concluded Sunday evening at Boost Academy, with Reinerio Zaldivar producing a perfect performance to capture the tournament title.
The five-round FIDE-rated standard chess tournament attracted 13 competitive players and was contested at a time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.
Zaldivar Finishes with a Perfect 5/5
Reinerio Zaldivar, a Mathematics teacher at C.W. Saunders Baptist High School, went undefeated through all five rounds, finishing in first place with a perfect score of 5 points.
Zaldivar’s passion for chess extended well beyond his own games. Between rounds, he spent much of his rest time reviewing and analysing games with other participants, sharing tactical ideas and offering advice—particularly to the junior players.
His willingness to teach and encourage others was a fitting reflection of the developmental spirit behind the Bahamas Chess Federation’s Open Series.
National Team Members Prepare for Chess Olympiad
Four members of The Bahamas’ National Chess Team—CM Kendrick Knowles, Dr. Nicholas Johnson, WCM Chika Pride and Diana Williams—used the tournament as valuable competitive preparation ahead of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, which begins in Uzbekistan on September 15, 2026.
The event provided the players with an important opportunity to sharpen their competitive form ahead of representing The Bahamas on the international stage.
Johnson and Lincoln Knowles Qualify for 2027 Nationals
The Bahamas Open Chess Classic was the third of four tournaments in the Bahamas Chess Federation’s 2026 Open Series and also served as a qualifier for the Bahamas National Chess Championship, scheduled for January 2027.
With their performances, Dr. Nicholas Johnson and Lincoln Knowles secured qualification spots to contest the 2027 National Championship.
Emerging Juniors Gain Valuable Experience
Four emerging junior players—brothers Bharath and Abijith Nair, along with siblings Gabriel and Amelia Clare—also used the tournament as preparation for the CAC Youth Chess Festival in Costa Rica in November.
Bharath and Abijith were once again highly competitive throughout the tournament, while Gabriel and Amelia achieved important draws against rated opposition. Those results could contribute toward both players joining the growing list of Bahamian FIDE-rated chess players.
Their performances highlighted one of the key objectives of the Open Series: providing developing Bahamian players with more opportunities to compete in rated tournaments, gain experience and strengthen their games.

Open Series Finale Coming in October
The fourth and final tournament of the 2026 BCF Open Series will be the New Providence Open, scheduled for October 9–11, 2026.
The Bahamas Chess Federation extends its appreciation to Boost Academy for hosting the event, FIDE Arbiter Angel Pride for serving as Tournament Arbiter, and Curtis Pride, Sr. for serving as Tournament Director and helping to deliver another successful national chess event.
